The Johnny Depp Project

I want to watch every Johnny Depp movie! Why? Because I like Johnny Depp. And movies. And lists. And projects. And this involves all four of those things, therefore it is awesome. (For the record, I realize this is an entirely unoriginal project, and for the record, I don’t really mind.)

[Links to videos will be underlined, the movies I've watched will be in green, I'll rate them (1-10), and maybe (if you're lucky) I'll say why.]

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (May skip this one. I don’t really do scary movies.)
  • Private Resort
  • Slow Burn
  • Platoon:  N/A.  Can’t really rate this one. First, it’s just not the kind of movie anyone is going to enjoy. Second, Depp didn’t have a massive role in the film, so I can’t really base my thoughts about it on his performance. (Although, he does speak Vietnamese in it which is pretty sweet.) However, I do think and have read that it had a massive impact on his career. This was a serious movie with serious actors, and it really influenced the way he approaches acting.
  • Cry-Baby
  • Edward Scissorhands: 8.5. Tim Burton is a genius. I really enjoyed it but was hoping for a different ending. It’s remarkable how few lines Johnny has being the title character, and it shows that great acting isn’t just about lines or dialogue. That being said, he delivers each of the lines he does have perfectly.
  • What’s Eating Gilbert Grape: Saw it, but need to see it again!
  • Benny & Joon:  9. Such a sweet story! And the diner scene is just adorable and wonderful.
  • Arizona Dream (The title makes me think of Raising Arizona, which makes me excited to see it, but it probably isn’t even remotely similar.)

  • Ed Wood
  • Nick of Time
  • Dead Man: 3. Super weird, slightly depressing, but interesting. I did laugh out loud on several occasions, but there were two particularly disturbing scenes that I wish I’d never seen. Overall, it’s a pretty good story, with lots of interesting underlying themes, and Depp is as fantastic as usual, but I wouldn’t recommend it to the general public.
  • Don Juan DeMarco
  • Cannes Man
  • Donnie Brasco
  • The Brave
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: 2. 10 points for originality, -8 for watchability (or lack thereof). I didn’t make it to the end. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.
  • Sleepy Hollow
  • The Astronaut’s Wife
  • The Ninth Gate: N/A. I’ve seen part of it. Didn’t like what I saw, but I’ll try again.
  • Chocolat 8.5. Love the atmosphere. Love the music. Love the story.
  • Before Night Falls:  3. I expected to like this one a lot more than I did. It was a recipe for a hit in my mind: Cuba, fighting for self-expression, Carter Burwell…but it was slow, I got confused, and there were more naked men than I usually care to see on a Saturday night. It did, however, make me much more interested in learning about the Cuban revolution, and both Javier Bardem and Depp (though his role was relatively small) were stunning.
  • From Hell (Donald Rumbelow!)
  • The Man Who Cried
  • Blow
  • Once Upon a Time in Mexic0: 5. Take it or leave it.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: 10. “Wherever we want to go, we go. That’s what a ship is, you know. It’s not just a keel and hull and a deck and sails. That’s what a ship needs. But what a ship is – what the Black Pearl really is – is freedom.” – Captain Jack Sparrow.
  • Secret Window
  • Finding Neverland: N/A. I’ve seen it, and I remember liking it, but I need to see it again.
  • The Libertine
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: 10. “Good morning starshine! The earth says hello!” Also, this might be my favorite scene in any movie ever.
  • Corpse Bride: 6.5. Far more charming than I ever expected.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: 6.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End: 6.5.
  • Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: 7. Johnny + Alan Rickman + singing? Yes, please. [Saw this movie at 10:30 a.m., by myself, on a Tuesday. That might be my favorite way to see movies.]
  • Public Enemies (Can’t wait to see this one!)
  • The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus: 6. A bit trippy, but entertaining.
  • Alice in Wonderland: 7. Lovely little piece of cinema.
  • The Tourist: 7.5. Very elegant, like an old movie. Good story, and well done.
  • Rango:  6.5. It’s a good story, and there are some really funny lines, but it was a bit long. Also, it’s not really for kids.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: 8.
  • The Rum Diary
  • Dark Shadows
  • The Lone Ranger

If you were in Pineville I would have a few of the ones that you haven’t seen for you to watch. Blow and Crybaby are two of my favorites that you haven’t seen. I saw
Sleepy Hollow once a long time ago and remember liking it. I couldn’t make it through Fear and Loathing, either. I also couldn’t make it through Ed Wood. We used to have Donnie Brasco but I hated it so much I gave it away. It made my soul hurt. Secret Window is a long time favorite. Another one I couldn’t make it all the way through was The Libertine, but that might have been because I couldn’t watch it with Micah around and had to return it before I got the chance to finish. Some of the characters in Rango grossed me out, but it was a good story.

    I liked Cry-Baby more than I thought I would.
